OVERVIEW

At this peaceful tidal estuary, you may meet a few locals walking their dogs or going for a run, but more than likely you will be all alone.

A beautiful walk to do early in the morning, with the sun rising over the shoulder of Knocknarea and the tranquil estuary teeming with birdlife.

There are two routes, one follows the sandy curve of the shore around the tip of the estuary and returns along Strandhill beach (approx 1hr 30min). The other route cuts across Shelley Valley sand dunes to meet up with Strandhill beach (approx 45min).

directions

  • Head south out of Strandhill on the Top Road, past the Dunes Tavern. After you leave the village, look out for your first right turn which will lead you down to Culleenamore Strand.
  • Follow the curve of sand to your right, as it sweeps around the estuary. The tide moves very quickly here, and it’s easier to walk on the higher, harder sand.
  • If you would like to take the Shelley Valley shortcut, you will need to turn right after about 10 minutes. There is no specific signpost, but once you head up into the dunes, you will see a path which leads you through the valley, along the bottom of the big dune. This will bring you back onto the main Strandhill beach.
  • If you would like to take the longer route, follow the waterline all the way around the tip of the bay. This will take you to the far end of Strandhill beach.
  • Keep an eye out for seals who love to play in the mouth of the estuary.
