‘Tis the season to start planning Christmas shopping and in Sligo there’s a real appetite to Support local this year.
Now in its second year, the Strandhill People’s Market is delighted to announce a series of Christmas market dates with extended shopping days and a brand new ‘night time’ market planned for this December. With artisan craft, independent food stalls, choirs and carol-singers, and a surprise visit by the main man himself Santa Claus, this winter’s Strandhill People’s Market will be the destination shopping experience for all visiting the Northwest this December.
Humble beginnings
Strandhill People’s Market started on the beachfront in May 2014, with just 16 local stalls on a Sunday afternoon. The market has since flourished into a weekly event throughout the year, which takes place in the unique venue of Hangar 1 at Sligo Airport in Strandhill, just a few short few minutes stroll from the beachfront.
Now a highlight on any trip to Sligo, the market boasts between forty to fifty stalls each week with a multitude of food stalls providing fresh baked goods, cheeses, meats, vegetarian and asian cuisine, as well as craft, design and surf stalls with unique gift ideas for all.
Planned expansion
For this Christmas season, the market will expand in to a second hangar at Sligo Airport, providing even more choice for the Christmas shopper. Growing on last year’s Christmas markets, founder Allan Mulrooney confirms there will be a hive of festive activity throughout the month with a programme of festive entertainment lined up.
“We are really excited about our Christmas season this year. We have taken on a second Hangar at Sligo airport meaning we can cater for even more local talent and offer our customers a wider variety to choose from for their Christmas shopping. Our night markets each Friday in December will be an opportunity for family and friends to meet, enjoy a mulled wine and a mince pie all while supporting local traders. We have some incredible live music lined up with local choirs, Christmas carols and some of Sligo’s finest to ensure the atmosphere is unrivalled.”
Trading hours for the night time markets each Friday during December are from 6pm-10pm with normal trading hours on Sundays from 11am to 4pm.
